Mercedes Schlapp has no easy task in her position in the role of White House adviser for strategic communications. It is not easy for Mercedes Schlapp as the advisor to strategic communications for the White House. Yet, through all of it Schlapp remains focused on the mission that she has been assigned, and is working closely with White House's policy and legislative affairs teams and policy shops as well in the larger communication operation for policy-related rollouts. So far, her primary focus has been issues such as security in schools and the opioid crisis, infrastructure, trade as well as other topics. As a current employee she isn't communicating with reporters. In March, she received a flurry of media attention when it was public that her name was going to be a potential candidate to fill in Hope Hicks's role as director of communications. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a good position as White House strategist communications advisor. She's faced with a president who serves as his own director of communications as well as numerous legal fights that can throw off the administration's messaging strategy and Cabinet secretaries caught up in their own controversy. Schlapp has never strayed from her focus, and worked closely in conjunction with White House policy and political teams. Her focus has been on issues including security at schools, opioids, infrastructure, along with trade. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters often in her current position. The issue came up in March when she received a flurry of interest, after it was it was reported that she would be an option to fill Hope Hicks's post as director of communications. This fight was ugly. Schlapp has sided with Tony Sayegh. He was an aspirant. The two began fighting in the media. Schlapp stated that after that the Washington Examiner ran a story that contained negative comments about Sayegh, she sat down for a chat with the latter.
